Big open spaces - lovely sky and the inclusion of the water pump and the water trough in the foreground takes the eye into the far distance. I enjoyed this picture Jim!

A very nice picture. All the elements; clouds, fence etc., lead the eye towards the windmill which anchors the whole image. There's a lot going on in the LH side of the frame but not so much on the right and, too me, the picture seems slightly off-balance. I tried cropping a bit off the right but I also had to crop some of those beautiful clouds to avoid a square format. I'm not sure that cropping is the right thing to do but here it is anyway.

Looking at the cropped vs uncropped images together, I can see that the OP has a much more spacious feel to it. My cropped version appears rather cramped by comparison.

Trevor,

You gotta play with these things. You never know if you don't try it! If I was going to crop it as you suggest, I'd take some more off the top and try to focus more attention on the old wooden trough (which I fell in love with, but She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed wanted to get home.)

Jim, I defintely choose the OP as my fav of the two. I wonder what it would look like if the contrast was bumped up a bit especially on the foreground.

I like the sense of vastness that is evoked by the opening picture but I can understand the cropping with the diagonal fencing serving to lead the eyes of the viewer right through to the windmill. The sense of vastness, the windmill and the unusual nature of the cloud formation all work together to create a visually pleasing image.

Well done sir; the sky is great, so I wouldn't crop any of it.

Great sky, and interesting foreground. I don't think I've seen a water trough made from a log before.

It does look a bit washed out on my monitor, but my monitor is not quite trust-worthy yet.

I really like this photo. I like the open right side of the original post; it underscores the
vastness of the scene. Well done.

prefer the uncropped version of this photo. The perspective draws the viewers eyes deep into the frame in almost all directions and the clouds are very interesting.

like the OP - vast all around

does that water trough have a liner?
is it gum?

The botttom half does look a fraction washed out - it didn't seem that way when I posted it.

And teh trough does not have a liner, but it did have some conctrete plugs if I recall correctly. I presume it was a eucalyptus, probably a red gum.

:-) The movement of the windmill put all those clouds on a swirly frenzy! It is a great sky, well complemented by the interesting stuff in the foreground.
