I like the lighting here and how the detailing in the man and his tools are drawn out, the contrast between the man and the background which works to make him stand out strongly in the image, and the sparks being thrown off which makes one blink they seem so real. One of the things I wish now that I would have been able to photograph was my father working as a blacksmith in his shop but I was too young and by the time I did take an interest in photograph he had retired. I've seen pictures that my brother took of my father at work and the workplace and there is such an sense of energy and creativity there that I would have liked to have been the photographer and not just the audience.

Perfect shutter speed and exposure. I'm amazed that he isn't wearing goggles.

Great shot. Good idea for him to wear goggles!

I'd still like to know how you do it, Christopher. Are these shots staged or they taken in the actual workplace of your subjects?

Comments by Christopher Azzopardi on Sun, 01/14/07 11:58

Hi Thank you all for your feedback. Steve, these shots are not staged. They are real people working in their own workshops. What is interesting about this blacksmith is that his workshop is cut in rock. For this shot I used a long exposure and a fill in flash.

Fantastic shot! Absolutely perfect in every aspect.

Thanks, Christopher, I only ask because some of the backdrops look very similar like it was shot the same studio: i.e. The Guitarist, 90 Year Old Man, Muskateer. etc.

Comments by Christopher Azzopardi on Sun, 01/14/07 12:20

Steve, they were all shot in different places. Unfortunately, I don't own a studio. Before I take a photo I try to find an interesting background. Here in Malta, we build houses with globegerina limestone which in my opinion is very photogenic. In the case of the Guitarist, it was shot in his apartment.

Another excellent portrait, Christopher. Have enough for a book yet?
