Debbie, this is a White-breasted Nuthatch. We have them here in NS but I've never been able to get a good shot as they are very quick and keep their distance. With the details you provided I now understand how you were able to get this fantastic shot. Well Done.

I like the contrast between the White-breasted Nuthatch and the muted nature of the background serves to make the little bird stand out strongly in the image, the contrast in texturing between the plumage of the Nuthatch and the roughness of the bark, and just the nature of the little bird's pose (it's head thrown back in song perhaps).

Just Great! Your background is unusual in color...what is it?

Beautiful capture of the nuthatch!

The background is out of focus fall foliage. It was far enough away that it made for a pretty good background. This was taken at my campsite in at Wichita Mt. I wasn't expecting this visitor but I didnt' waste any time changing subjects and recomposing. :)

I did a little crop (around 10% I would guess) but nothing else in Photoshop except for usual sharpening and vibrance.
