Difference of Opinion

Our lunch waitress at a small restaurant in Pomona, Calif. It wasn't busy so I
asked her if I could take a few portraits. She didn't feel she was very
photogenic and was a little nervous. I had her sit in a chair in front of an old
brick wall in the covered patio area. She settled down and I took about 6 with
my friend's digi and 18-55 kit lens. Told her I'd return the following week with
prints which I did today. Touched up the shirt a little. Face untouched except
for a gentle nudge in levels and curves.

I wish often that I could be more insightful when it comes to commenting on photographs but unfortunately that is not a skill that I have and I have to be satisfied with viewing pictures and doing rather meager comments. I like this image with the young lady looking very relaxed and casual in the setting... she stands out strongly set against the light brick wall and one's focus is immediately drawn to her smile and the catchlights in her eyes which bring her to life for me.

Excellent portrait, Jeff... :)
Thanks also to the model's beauty.

Bravo!

Good sharpness and nice lighting. A fine portrait and I am sure she was very happy with the results...;-)

What a beautiful subject! However, my eye kept going right to light
brick background. IMO the brick almost washes out the lovely face of
this waitress. I found myself forcing my eye away from the brick back to
her.

You have a good eye for beauty and you have related well with her so she has gotten comfortable in her pose. Her slight tilt to go along with her symmetrical features is very nice. Too much of a snapshot, perhaps, for such a worthy subject. The off-color patches on her face and the glistening nose bridge and forehead take away from the picture's appeal.

Bricks are great for race tracks, firemen, et al., but are sort of lacking in being kind to lady's portraits. Photoshop can do wonders with odd backgrounds...
