The original image was a rather monochromatic shade of bluish green and, shot outdoors in overcast conditions, not particularly contrasty. I converted to B&W with Power Retouch Black and White Studio, which enables various contrast and color filter adjustments, my objective being to boost the contast to bring out the leaf edges and surface texture. After that, with the same objectives, I cranked the sharpening up near crunchy -- et voila. I think the reason this turned out as well as it did was due to the nature of the leaves themselves. They were covered in a fine fuzz, which had the effects of adding texture and also gathering light, both of which effects were then amplified in the processing.
