I bet the photo is better.

I like the pensive... thoughtful feel of your portraiture of the young girl (her face and even her form echo that pensive feel), the overall painterly feel of the composition, and how the color of the girl's dress complements that of the steps on which she is sitting.

portrait
try not to cut into the pupil with the bridge of the nose. avoid breaking the plane of the cheek with the tip of the nose. would love some catch light to bring the eyes to life.

paint
pay extra attention to light and dark transitions around the face. If you are not going to scuffle then try a softer brush to blend. You don't want it to look like she has long sideburns.

try to work from back to front. it will avoid things like the top step pushing into her left shoulder.

nice direction of brush strokes on the figure. I like how you followed the form to give it depth. brush direction on the back steps works as it simulates wood grain, but the foreground brush strokes are a bit of a mess.

ok all minor details on a lovely image of an adorable girl.

Don't know anything about the Painter program, but like the way her skin tones in with the background.

Comments by Linda Frey on Wed, 04/04/07 16:33

I don't know the program either. I do like the colours and the pose, and the painterly look.

It's a charming portrait Ruth - I just love the pensive look. The use of the stairs is an excellent idea, uncluttered background.

I think I might have preferred it as a regular photo - parts of it look a bit unnatural, mostly the legs and feet. I have to agree with S Guy about the face. Colours and composition are good.

I think it is a beautiful protrait. Since I am a painter, I can appreciate the painted look. I would love to play around with a program like this! Bet it was fun.

Comments by Steve Owen on Wed, 04/04/07 22:13

I am not familiar with the program either, but I love the pose...beautiful colors and a beautiful young lady.

So, do you paint from the photograph? Or do you put the photograph as a layer underneath
your painting?
Just curious!
: )

Els, Corel Painter let you put digital tracing paper over the image, and you can either paint on that, or you can paint directly on the original copy, picking up the color from it.

I have a digital tablet and pen, and it's just like painting with brushes, including pressure making it darker, etc. This painting was painted with acrylic brushes and blenders, directly on the photo, using its colors. Every pixel was painted. They now have a light version called Corel Painter Essentials 3 priced like Photoshop Elements.

Charming young lady, I like your composition with the stairs having a change of direction! The painting effect looks cool also!

Excellent choice of background.
I like the painting effect

I thought when I saw this image first that it was a photo with some filtering work and thought it looked fantastic. Then when I read your discription of what you did I liked it even more. personaly I don't see anything wrong with the image at all STUNNING WORK and I always look forward to seeing what you come up with next.

Nice one Ruth. The effect has been very well done.

Nice portrait, but i prefer without the painting effect....In my photo "perfect light" is only one picture and not two....Regards

I'm not very sure if I like the painting effect, but I sure love her pose and expression, as well as the overal composition and colors.

A marvelous portrait Ruth. I love the pensive expression you captured so well. I also like the
color combination and graphics.

A portrait that lives up to the title/caption. Painter is new to me. Interesting discussion on its use.

I really like the comp, and the colors are great too. I'm not so keen on the long brush strokes, esp on her skin. My reaction in that regard is similar to the reaction I had to SGuy's digital painting of a young girl (http://www.photocritique.net/g/s?zzbJLn-pSGUY). You might want to read the discussion under that post, it's pretty interesting.

Hey Tony. That was a good thread. What's funny is that my living room table is now covered with tubes of acrlic, brushes, canvases of all sizes, mini easels, plus assorted other painting stuff and I haven't done a digital painting in over a year. Some how wet paint got in my blood. So Ruth be careful, you never know what could happen when you travel down the path of paint!

Comments by Ruth Rittichier on Fri, 04/06/07 17:56

SGuy, You're not just kidding! I'm already starting a watercolor course on April 16th.
I enjoyed reading the reviews on your painting per Tony's link. I missed all that when I couldn't get on PC for about 3 years. Actually, I loved the second one.
Why did you give it up? I hope to see more of your digital paintings on PC. It's the upcoming thing, according to the professional photogs.

Upcoming thing? Photopainting seems to be all the rage on the various photo sites.
