Fresh Chainsaw Cut in a Spalted Maple Log
Comments by Dave Geyer on Thu, 07/31/08 21:42 This spalting pattern is even more significant, but I had to get in closer and stop down more. I was reluctant to set the ISO higher, so I tried it with a longer shutter hand held, and it's not quite as sharp.
Comments by Linda Frey on Thu, 07/31/08 23:02 Neat shots, Dave. The second may be a touch soft, but it's an interesting design. I see an angel bear. I'll have to google spalting. Comments by Arfon John on Fri, 08/01/08 04:28 These images justgo to show that good photographs can be produced almost anywhere with a little imagination and skill. I love the colours and textures in both shots and its fun trying to see "things" in the patterns. Like Linda I can also make out a bear head in the second one. Comments by Jan Bjorklund on Fri, 08/01/08 08:41 I like the images for the shapes that have been captured in the cut wood (this is especially true in the second picture which though softer creates the sense, for me, of countries seen on the page of an atlas). A black background works especially well with both of these pictures. Comments by Steve Owen on Fri, 08/01/08 11:26 Both are wonderful! Comments by Tony Scheuhammer on Fri, 08/01/08 11:58 these are great Dave! Comments by Claudia Heathington on Fri, 08/01/08 13:40 The first one brought memories of Fall in Vermont. I too saw the bear angel, with wings. Great photography, textures, color and design. Comments by jj on Fri, 08/01/08 14:29 I like the second one. I want that for woodwork! :) Comments by Rory Hudson on Fri, 08/01/08 17:54 Both very good. I particularly like the OP, such a range of tones and the effect is close to being 3 dimensional. Really interesting shapes too. Comments by Dave Geyer on Fri, 08/01/08 21:21 Thank you everyone for your kind and thoughtful comments. I actually looked up spalting myself to make sure I spelled it right. Turns out that it has two meanings, both relating to wood. One, that I was unaware of, simply means split. The other meaning, which I had run into as a wood craftsman myself, pertains to wood that has been distressed, usually by some form of fungus or other organism, in such a way as to be discolored in random patterns. Spalted wood is much prized by fine woodworkers if it is not also rotted.
Comments by Maria Salvador on Sat, 08/02/08 10:36 I like both very much. The second is my preferred, a wonderful abstract! Comments by G.B. SHETTLER on Sat, 08/02/08 10:58 Great photo & info Dave. Are you sure the OP is not a Jeff Dye landscape photo :-) Comments by Julie M. Dant on Sat, 08/02/08 12:43 I've named your wonderful OP. "Calicoed Wood". ;0) I love it. I also agree with Jan on the comments photo about having the look of a map. Especially like the 'outlined' continents..;0) Nice stuff, Dave, as always. |
