That's my lifeboat I don't ever want to need!

This had a lot of exposure range problems. Rather than use automatic HDR or something like that, I duplicated the layer, set it to blend overlay, desaturated the extra layer, inverted it, and that brought things to this state.

What do you think? Is this a common thing to do I never heard of before? (I know more about darkrooms than I do about photoshop, even if I do know a lot about DSP in general.)

The perspective works to carry the eyes of the viewer from your lifeboat through to the distant people walking along the deck. A relaxing feel to the image created by the deck chair while at the same time touched by a slightly ominous feel of where one would have to go in the case of shipboard danger.

I don't think the processing is working for you here. The deck chairs and planks have a muddy look to them. The white of the buildings in the background all runs together. The sea, sky, and mountains have neither definition nor color appeal. The composition would benefit from a crop from the top and elimination of the intruder on the left. If the people or a person were closer, the leading line would be more effective whereas the tiny group holds little interest. I like what your eye saw and agree there is a nice image to be made here if you can solve the dynamic range problem.
