The lower black area creates the sense of a black beard for the chickadee. The catch light in the eye works well to bring the little bird to life for me.
The contrast between that of the background and the chickadee serves to make the bird stand out in the image.

Birds for 1000, Alex. ......Seeing all of these wonderful bird
shots, inspired me to do a little research.....There are 2059 bird
species in the continent of North America and there are 6 Billion
birds in the U.S. Now, I'm ready to go for the championship. :-)
