Strong contrast between the heron and the water in both pictures helps to make the bird stand out strongly. I prefer the second picture... more of a turbulent feel to the water brings a more energetic feel to the composition.

I agree with Jan on liking the second photo more. I find that seeing both wings strengthens
the image. Plus, the second looks a tad sharper. Great photo.

Thanks for the comments, I have this image in my mind of what I want to capture with this bird, and these are not it, but it is the closest I have come to creating that image. I have learned alot studying the Heron, and look forward in acheiving my idea of the perfect shot.

Both are nice and surely nteresting. I too prefer the second photo, for the movement and deeper color on the water.

Just for the heck of it, why not try some "motion blur" on the background?
