All your compositions are so eyecatching... perhaps not always clear to myself but even without understanding your meaning with each composition I find just viewing your creations an intriguing challenge. I like your incorporation of color, light and texture in this creation. Perhaps I've asked this before but how long would it take you to create an image such as homage?

Thank you for your comments Jan, you always seem to have something constructive to say about my work. I will try to address your questions as best as I can.

As with most of my work, the “constructs” I create are open to various interpretations. My intended meaning is not necessarily important. How you see it matters more. There is no specific meaning primarily because many are constructed by “free association” similar to “automatic” methods employed by early Dadaist writers in the early 1900’s. [A challenging task at times.] One observer might see something that they can relate to their life’s experience while another person may see something else. I believe this allows a construct to evolve, cross demographic lines, and give it more substance than intended by its creator. We interpret art based on our personal experiences. I merely create from snippets of my experience while you [the audience] have the burden of interpretation. You have the more challenging task in my opinion.

As to how long it takes from the initial thought to the completed work … it differs from one construct to another depending on the complexity of my thoughts and where they wander. Homage was conceived overnight, born from an unusual snippet of a dream that I remembered. The premise was dream-based and therefore not totally automatic. Being dream-based accelerated the process. The Dadaist automatism occurred during the process of execution. This wandering took more time only because I wanted the final work to remain a free association of spontaneous elements... a difficult task while working with such a technical medium like the computer. In real time, this piece took about three days, or about twenty hours. Then it sat and simmered for a couple weeks before letting it fly.

On another matter, my constructs are not photographs from a purist standpoint. They probably have no real value here on this photo web site. They are not intended to adhere to many purist photographic rules. Part of their intention here is to display the breaking of rules. Part of it is to seek a different audience. However, I must admit that they are based on the photographic process that requires capturing elements, observing appropriate lighting and utilizing some traditional compositional theory. In my case, the reliance I have on dreams for my subject matter aligns me with some Surrealist techniques while my struggle to allow free associations of elements aligns me with some aspects of Dada. These are only part of my life experiences that direct my creative process… your life experience can direct you. I only hope you can find the value in the effort. It is still evolving.

I’ll hop off my soapbox now.

Wow, love the way this looks. Reminds me of the animation in "9" and various other similar works in that genre.
