The Masai mother and her child stand out strongly against the background of the village. One finds their attention moving back and forth between the eyes of the child and those of the mother... the catchlights enhance that sense of flow in the image for me.

Nice portrait. The background is a little busy but I still find the image very interesting with that clutter. Good focus on the mother and child.;-)

Very good environmental portrait.
Good separation of the main subject and the admittedly "busy"
but very interesting background.

very good tones.

I love this but find it too dark.

Too dark for me too.

This is what PS sees as "normal" through "Auto Contrast"

.

Michael may prefer it darker ...
or his monitor may be calibrated brighter than "normal".

I never use auto anything in PS. It's such a blunt instrument.

I think too much work has been done on the photo to make any adjustment
work with this version. Other than the foreground everything else looks
wonky or at least unnatural.

It's such good raw material though that it merits starting over.

Thanks for the great comments. I'm glad to hear that you like the image. I do too. I just got
back from Africa and have been pouring through images and surely have not spent the right
kind of time on them; it is so helpful to me to hear your notes and critiques, thank you. I will
take a fresh look at this one in about a week as I find letting time go by helps to view the
image with fresh eyes.

As far as the monitor too bright. I must say that I struggle with monitor calibration. I use an
iMac 24" and have tried various hardware and software solutions. I actually can't get my
monitor dim enough to match prints that I have proofed from WHCC. So thanks for that as
well. Any ideas are most welcome.
