High School Sports Portrait

I was un happy with the junk photos you buy through your local high schools. So I started with my own kids.

This is a 3 light set up using SB600 w/ modifiers

Good choice. Well done, but I would crop more off the hair, and fix the hot spot just under his hairline.

Well done and as long as you like the look you've created with the
editing it's well done. It's a little unnatural.

I like the contrast between the individual and the background which serves to bring a 3D feel to the image. I think a lot of people would be happy with a softer version which would lessen the roughness of the skin but I like the portrait as is... the perspective adds to the visual impact with the connection made between the eyes of the individual and those of the viewer.

An arresting photograph; however, white showing beneath the eye (sanpaku) signifies ill health to many people, though that is disputed by others. In this case the young man has his head down and is looking up and probably would not exhibit sanpaku if he were looking straight ahead, yet the "three whites" always seem a bit disturbing to me. I agree with Ruth about cropping more off his head. Easy to see by scrolling on this screen what a difference that would make. I like your lighting, though his left ear seems too dark as compared the right one. Very close to being a great photo in my opinion.

Eric, I'm a parent of two boys. Very active in sports. I'm gonna guarantee you that this blows away those fly by night photogs that have
been taking our money ever since our boys/girls joined the team. "Junk"
is an understatement. I'd show this to all the parents on your boys team
and cash in on your talent.

Thanks for the great feedback. I do like to go towards the more agressive looking styles. It helps seperate me from the local heard.

Michael, Thanks for the tip on the eyes. I try to watch for that when the eye is pushed left ot right. I had not considered when the center of the eye moves upward.

I look forward to posting more images and getting thist type of criticka feedback. I'm a big fan of facebook but everyon e seems to ove everyting. Thanks again.

Constructive comments have already been made but when I first saw this photo my first
silent comment was "I've got better things to do dad. Make it quick." I'm not suggesting
a big toothy grin but get it out of deadpan. Maybe this is the look you're after but if you
put photos of all the boys on the wall with this expression it would look like the team just
lost the championship by 1 point.
